1. a soldier trained to make brief, daring, surprise raids upon enemy territory.
2. a group of such soldiers.
3. in South Africa: a) an armed force raised by Portuguese or Dutch settlers against bandits and marauders, or by the Boers against the British. b) a raid by such a force.
